A tour of Boudhanath Stupa

What a coincidence it was to find taking us on this small tour, Badri Nepal, the same tour guide who brought us to Swayambunath seven years ago. Badri Nepal has developed a little more insulation over the years, but no less intriguing in his explanation as we went around the UNESCO listed Buddhist Stupa.

I was very glad Badri brought us up to the monastery that was just beside Boudhanath Stupa because Serene and I, despite having been to Boudhanath three times previously, have never had a chance to visit this monastery. Badri even took the time to explain to some of us the picture of The Wheel of Life.

I was on the prow for a Tibetan singing bowl.

“So what is your opinion, Badri? Should we get one in Thamel or get one here? I read that the most reliable shops for a Tibetan singing bowl are just beside Boudhanath Stupa.” I asked sincerely of him.

To which he replied: “Of course if you know your product well, you may find a good steak at a very good price in Thamel. But at least here the shops are very established shops that have been selling these genuine bowls for many years. Your chances of getting a quality bowl here instead of a fake or low quality one is higher. Prices will not be cheaper than Thamel. But not much more expensive either. Their prices are reasonable.”

Badri continued to explain that you need to know more about the singing bowls before you even go for one. You would need to know why you are getting one, what type you are looking for. And he elaborated on the quality of a real bowl with the seven metals and one which claimed to have seven metals but in actual fact was not.

THE VIDEO OF DARRIC GOING AT THE BOWL! [Must Watch!]

“Uncle, may I buy you a singing bowl?” offered Shu Ning. What a sweet gesture!

So did Kong Wan.

But nothing could beat the way the shopkeeper GONG my head.  Despite his best efforts I felt no resonation. No lasa.

We had fun in the Singing bowl shop, the whole lot of us. While the shop keeper was busy trying to transmit some vibrations through me, Darric was having a good time trying to create some rippling effects on the water in a bowl and trying his hands at generating some notes from one of the bowls.

Meanwhile Kong Wan was using all his being to bring out the resonance in a large bowl in his hand.

A few bowls passed through my hands. It was strange how each bowl sung its own tune and how your body responded to each bowl’s note. I later read on the instruction manual: “... do not force the sound louder than it wishes to vibrate otherwise it will rattle unpleasantly. Each bowl has a life of its own and sings its unique song. If your body doesn’t respond to the particular bowl try another one for a special sound for you. You will recognize your sound immediately but you have to experience first to find it...”

That was exactly how my body responded immediately to a last bowl pitched to The F note- the F or heart chakra. On that very afternoon in the shop when Shu Ning played on this bowl, straight away it spoke to me and I knew immediately that this heart chakra bowl was meant for me. A gift from Shu Ning and Fann that I would keep with me very carefully, which I was sure I would be using a lot in time to come.
